The Yoshinkan style of Aikido was founded in 1955 by Gozo
Shioda (1915-1994), Ueshiba's top student. Shioda Sensei named his dojo "the
Yoshinkan" which literally means "house for the cultivation of the mind".

At the world headquarters (Honbu) for Yoshinkan Aikido in Tokyo, over 1000
students train each month. Yoshinkan Aikido is taught at universities and
public schools throughout Japan, and is the only style mandatory for special groups such
as the Tokyo Riot Police, various divisions of the armed forces and the Tokyo Metropolitan
Police. The Yoshinkan style is practiced worldwide and a large number of western students
train at the Honbu Dojo.
