All classes for new students at the AYC dojo are supervised by
Kimeda Sensei. Kimeda Sensei is responsible for the
introduction of Aikido in Canada. He is currently the highest
ranking Yoshinkan instructor outside of Japan.
All new students to the AYC dojo receive one on one instruction
from a black belt instructor. By learning the basic exercises and
movements in this way, new students easily and quickly become
accustomed to both the class structure and the training regimen of
Aikido.
The AYC dojo maintains a friendly and helpful environment for all
students. Senior students are available to offer additional help
either before or immediately after each class.
The basic movements of Yoshinkan Aikido are derived from sword techniques. As such, traditional training in Yoshinkan Aikido strives to maintain a strong emphasis on the teaching of traditional sword techniques. The study of Yoshinkan Aikido also involves the jo (staff) and the tanto (knife) to emphasize Aikido principles. Students at the AYC learn all three of these weapons – the bokken (wooden sword), the jo (staff) and the tanto (knife) – as they pertain to Aikido. Both defensive and offensive techniques are studied as are the various methods of defending against these weapons – either with or without weapons.
